Jamband giants Phish will receive a special Lifetime Achievement Award when the Jammy Awards return to Madison Square Garden on May 7."It's going to be quite a scene," the event's co-producer and co-creater Peter Shapiro tells Spinner. "There is going to be a lot of energy in the air, and given the nature of the Jammys, you never know what is going to happen. I am planning the event and the truth is I don't know."
The All Star concert will mark the seventh installment of the Jammys, and honor the twenty-year run of Phish, who inspired a new generation of improv musicians, following in the footsteps of the Grateful Dead before disbanding in 2004. "Few bands have meant as much to the improvisational music community," Shapiro says.
Previous Jammy Lifetime Achievement Award winners include B.B. King, the Meters, the Grateful Dead, Buddy Guy, Steve Winwood and Frank Zappa. Tickets for the event go on sale on March 20.
