China's Ministry of Culture announced Friday that Bjork "broke Chinese law and hurt Chinese people's feelings" when she dedicated the song 'Declare Independence' to Tibet during her performance in Shanghai last Sunday (March 2).In reaction, the Ministry of Culture has announced intentions to tighten restrictions on foreign performers and is considering banning the Icelandic pop singer. "We will further tighten controls on foreign artists performing in in order to prevent similar cases from happening in the future," the Ministry of Culture posts on its website. "We shall never tolerate any attempt to separate from and will no longer welcome any artists who deliberately do this."
Earlier in the week, Bjork took to her own URL to defend her actions. The eccentric singer also dedicated the song to the independence movement in Kosovo in a performance in last month.
"I have been asked by many for a statement after dedicating my song 'Declare Independence' to both Kosovo and (amongst others) on different occasions," she writes. "I would like to put importance on [the fact] that I am not a politician, I am first and last a musician and as such I feel my duty to try to express the whole range of human emotions."
"The urge for declaring independence is just one of them but an important one that we all feel at some times in our lives," she continues. "This song was written more with the personal in mind but the fact that it has translated to its broadest meaning, the struggle of a suppressed nation, gives me much pleasure. I would like to wish all individuals and nations good luck in their battle for independence. Justice! Warmth, Bjork."
