Father? He split. Mother? She's sick. Baby sister? She's hungry. So Fancy's mom did what any loving parent would do: sent her teenage daughter uptown to service the townfolk. Turns out Mama died and the baby got taken away anyway, so it was for naught. But Fancy did OK, finding her way to a "Georgia mansion." Kind of like 'Pretty Woman,' except with parental betrayal and starving babies.
You obviously didn't pay enough attention to the song . Fancy's mother sent her daughter "uptown " because they had nothing and no hope and she clearly wanted Fancy to excape their life of poverty before it took her and her future too. Her mother knew the only way Fancy could get out was by by becoming a mistress to rich and powerful men (" Here's your one chance, Fancy don't let me down. lord forgive me for what I do, but if you want out it's up to you") her mother obviously didn't like it but with the situation didn't feel there really was much of a choice. Nowhere in the song does her mother ever mention that Fancy do this to help her family out or save anyone but Fancy. Fancy sure doesn't seem to think her mother betrayed her. She defends her mother to the hypocrites and self rightous who criticise her. She actually credits her mothers choice for the fact that she hasn't wanted for anything in 15 years .
I agree with Dale Jr Girl- This song is about what she had to do to survive- the mother spent ALL the money they had so her daughter could have a chance at life! Great damn song!!
