Lots of music snobs here, both ways. How about this--everyone listen to what you like. Sound good?
And Indie music and the like can be amazing or it can be crap. Kinda like foreign films. It's hit and miss just like anything else.

people listen to mainstream because it's produced by big record labels. these labels spend millions of dollars trying to promote the music for top 40 and shit like that. the non-mainstream artists don't want to be under these labels because they usually take you in and toss you out if you don't make "pop" or "hip" music. Musicians play their own music, not the major record labels' music
