On This Date in 1989: Pepsi cancels its sponsorship of Madonna in the wake of the religious controversy sparked by her video for 'Like a Prayer,' which includes a ban from the pope.The Almanac Advises for March 25: "The Madonna play a crucial role in Christianity, most notably in the Catholic religion. As the most prominent and most revered female figure in the New Testament, she is considered the primary role model for women of faith, with many emulating her piety."
