On This Date in 1984: After an argument, Marvin Gaye is shot to death by his father, just a day short of the soul singer's 45th birthday.

The Almanac Advises for April 1: "In families where the father is the household disciplinarian, what initially may begin as a firm hand can quickly escalate to abuse. Such harsh treatment can lead to psychic or physical damage to the child."
