Grefe serves as the DJ in the four-piece band Pink Skull. "Most of our music is made on outboard synths and samplers, not to mention the band itself," Grefe explains to Spinner. "We do have a few moogs at our disposal -- Jupiter 6, Juno 106, Farfisa, SP 1200 -- plus drums, percussion, guitars and bass. Our little family of DJs -- Dave P, Mike Z, Sparkles, Greg Foreman, Ian and myself -- are responsible for creating the 'indie dance party ' here in Philadelphia. People are totally open minded and supportive of tons of events. Philly's a pretty sick party town."
With remixes of indie artists ranging from Man Man and HEALTH to Architecture in Helsinki on their resume, Grefe says that how the mixes are chosen comes down to one thing: connection. "I look for qualities inherent in the track that we feel we could relate to and expand upon when coupled with our aesthetic sensibilities," he says.
Pink Skull recently released a 12" single called 'Drugs Will Keep Us Together,' with remixes by Brooklyn's electo-funk outfit 33Hz and Trevor Lovelys. The effort comes just before 'Zeppelin 3,' their first full-length album, which features collaborations with Mirah and Jon Anderson of White Whale, and remixes of Icy Demons and Plastic Little.
Pink Skull put together an exclusive DJ mix of fresh techno and electro, highlighted by some of their own tracks, exclusively for Spinner. Check it out below.
