but... we aren't as wise as the parents and people before us. They have years more of experience being alive and learning things than we do. I'm 16 and i am nowhere near as wise as my mom or dad. Granted, some adults are stupid. That's because they refuse to learn and refuse to grow up!
I think this lyric means what it says. One day our generation (the youth) will be the adults who shape the world. So we should work on being a little better than the ones who came before us. It's a motivating line.
John has a slipped some stupidity. So what? Is anyone surprised of that happening? Just leave the man be.

Dang. Give him credit. He means one day this young thinking bullcrap might go away and we can prove we are just as wise as the parents and people before us. And we can have them be ready to change the world. But that day isn't quite here yet.
