Bad Songs by Good Bands: No. 13

'Rape Me'
--Nirvana (1993)

With its look-at-me outrageous title begging to be misinterpreted, Kurt Cobain and his unhelpfully obtuse lyrics managed to alienate the women he claimed to write this song in solidarity of. The big box stores refused to stock 'In Utero' on its shelves until Cobain agreed to change the track's name to 'Waif Me.' It says a lot when Wal-Mart's censorious meddling actually improves a song.

are you saying that retitling the song to something meaningless improved it?

maybe old grandpa's like whatever jackass's came up with this list of top 10's they don't like hated this song. and I do realize now that I'm older it doesn't really work as intended but for people that came of age on nirvana this is one of the better songs on there best album.

let me guess the album sucked because it wasn't polished to turd quality, but near as their contract would let them to releasing raw tapes?

seriously whoever came up with these songs needs to find a new job, music critic is not where you belong, go do something that doesn't expose your age and taste for repative non challaging, risky music.

Oh come on. That is some bullshit. Some of these songs I have to agree with, but others I really disagree. I mean Kurt Kobain and that whole movement is a great part of American Rock History. Its a sound that was dark, when everyone was trying to be happy. Guns n Roses made people pumped up and ready to party, whereas, Nirvana made people feel the real pain of reality. It was no joke and there were was no help. It was a drummer, Guitarist and a Bass. The Power Trio. You can beat it.

I have to say I am truly offended that this would be included on a list of "bad" songs. I believe Kurt was willing to go somewhere people don't want to and be damn blunt about it as well. The song has a lot of meaning to it and it irks me that anyone would even consider it for this list.

As a survivor many times over, I can say I do connect to song... I like it. Its bold and its not promoting the act. Quite the opposite...

Why am i the only person in here that realizes that Nirvana is one of the most OVERRATED bands ever? I wish Kurt Cobain would never had died cause then people would realize that he sucks...he cant play the guitar and his lyrics are overrated as well...seriously you guys need to find a new idol...one who knows how to write good music.

And what exactly do you consider overrated? Or great guitar playing? When one of the GREATEST guitarists of all time, Chuck Berry, one of the INVENTORS of rock, said Kurt had a touch any player would be jealous of, your comments are pretty moot.

Wow.... I thought I was the only one with the vision to see that Nirvava was the most over-rated band ever. We should start a support group where we can really open up and talk about the past. For example when that simple-minded fool shot himself because he could not control his "high" I'll always remember Richard Blade(famous L.A. KROQ dj of the time) was on the air and while trying to fight back the tears announced that KROQ had grief counselors on stand-by. I suppose they believed there would be mass suicide in the streets of L.A. The way Blade was going on you would think there was a meteor heading straight for Earth. This had to be one of the most shameful moments in radio history. I still have nightmares after watching those obese Seattle girls in their plaid shirts sobing on the news during the following days. And by the way, why the hell aren't any of Cindy Lauper's songs on the "Worst Songs Ever" list?

F..k you. Have you even listened to any of his music and how deep the magic of his words are? Every song Nirvana made has touched me on so many levels in one way or the other! Kurt Cobain is a mastermind... and he still lives thru his song creations. I still listen to him on a daily basis. I love NIRVANA as much as i did when i was 13. Kurt Cobain is always missed and loved...forever!!!

This feature is so useless and vacant of truth I had to say something. I almost didn't care except for the dead wrong statement of what the song is about. the wonderous skill of reading will reveal the song is baically about the media that worked him up then cut him down with drug and personal slander, much of what this feature is doing. I'm glad so far to see every comment from readers is at least close to being on the right side of whats right.
Besides this whole topic is just utter crap! Music is creation and to say it is automaically bad because it's offensive is just an open display of feeblemindedness. Say something is bad because it is void, and takes away from it's own purpose. Much like the article I'm responding to.
