On This Date in 1940: Toni Tennille, of the Captain and Tennille, is born Cathryn Antoinette Tennille in Montgomery, Ala.The Almanac Advises for May 8: "As second in command, the first mate is entrusted with making sure the captain is content -- for example, that he is steering the correct course. The first mate is also responsible for the well-being of the crew. Duties also entails handling the security of any packages the captain is transporting."
