What's that Song in the Dodge Journey Commercial?

'Sun Is Out,' by the Apples in Stereo

For advertisers these days, twee indie music is the sound of eternal youth, which is exactly what most of them want to sell you: Their car (or body wash or granola bar) was put on this earth to exempt the buyer from the stresses of daily life. The relentlessly carefree Denver band the Apples in Stereo is the latest in an ever-longer line of Econoline bands cutting deals with big business to pay for gas in the van (or maybe they got a new Dodge Journey crossover wagon in exchange for forking over rights to their song 'Sun Is Out'; we don't have a copy of the contract handy).

In the ad, a bunch of responsibility-free young adults spot a huge inflatable gorilla on a hilly city street in a 101-degree heat wave. They pull a quick U-ie, pop the hatch and proceed to unfold an enormous water slide. Within seconds they're hurtling down the street on mats, and on the ape.

On the soundtrack, Robert Schneider's loosely collected bandmates join the frontman in a repetitive melodic chant of the song title, 'Sun Is Out,' from the band's most recent album, 'New Magnetic Wonder.' If crossover vehicles like the Dodge Journey are the new family truckster, the message is clear: This one is totally hip enough for kids with enough time and energy to turn a corner of L.A. into an impromptu water park.

'If you can dream it, do it,' intones a narrator. Just put the ape back where you found it.
