On This Date in 1980: Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis commits suicide by hanging himself in his kitchen. He killed himself the day before the band was to go on its first American tour.

The Almanac Advises for May 18: "Hodophobia, or the fear of travel, can manifest itself in many ways. Some people have an absolute aversion to taking trips, others may find that certain situations or destination hinder their ability to take a journey. Naturally, this can adversely affect a person for whom travel is necessary for business, thus compounding the stress caused by the phobia itself."
