Serj Tankian Co-Writing a Musical

System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian is collaborating with Tony Award-winning playwright Steven Sater on 'Prometeheus Bound,' a show based on the Greek tragedy. Sater, who worked with Duncan Shiek on 'Spring Awakening,' tells Spinner the musical eclecticism is what fans would expect from Tankian. "It's got this amazing ancient Greek verse thing going on with this cool electronic hyperspace rock," he says. "It's unlike anything you've heard."Sater says the show is on the fast track, with eight songs already done. "It's going fast now, we did a reading and it went really well," Sater says. "We'll go quickly. We'll probably do it out of town, maybe in Boston, and then see about maybe bringing it to New York. And there'll be a record."
While 'Spring Awakening' brought a younger audience to the theater, Sater knows Tankian's involvement will beak down those doors even more. "Of course the kind of songs I'm going to write with Duncan are really different than the kind of songs I write with Serj," he says. "I just saw him in concert, that audience was amazing. First of all it's 80 percent male. They're moshing and screaming the whole time. I think it will open up really different things for both of us. It's a really exciting collaboration."
