Potent Quotables: Santogold's Sick of It

"It's totally racist. Everyone is just so shocked that I don't like R&B. It's stupid. It's pissing me off."--Santogold

The former Philly punk addressed the heat surrounding her anti-rhythm & blues sentiments.

I was going to ask what "Your Voice" was till I dropped it. SHe only said that her album was supposed to be pop. I guess dub and reggae kind of goes against the purpose of what she asked for.

That's just my thought. As for the racist thing, in a way, I agre. After all, not all black people like hip-hop and all that. But in a way, I think Santi blew it a little out of proportion by calling it "Racist". That's just me.

Thre is so much reverse racism. There is a tendency to want to blame any comment or surprise as racism. These people that scream racism are playing role of victim. Tell her to get over it and herself

I wish people would use words correctly. A racist is a person with a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race OR 2 : racial prejudice or discrimination.

The fact that folks are shocked or have a negative attitude has nothing to do with racial differences producing an inherent superiority NEITHER does it mean people don't like her because she's black.

What she is, in fact, is an idiot. I don't care what type of music she decides to sing. I listen to everything from Opera to Hip-Hop (old school) simply because I love music. If you love music and enjoy performing the type of music you like, you don't care what people say and it wouldn't piss you off.

Do you think Living Color, Lenny Kravitz, Leontyne Price, Kathleen Battle, Cowboy Troy or Charlie Pride give a care what folks think about them singing something other than R&B? NOT!!

Her assumption that the surprise of people is based on racism is in itself racist...She is the racist.

WELL SISTA, I DO DIG YOUR SONG AND I CAN RELATE TO WHAT YOUR SAYING BUT THOSE EARRINGS DON'T HELP YOUR CAUSE. THAT GOLD JEWLERY IS VERY HIP HOP AND R&B. MAYBE YOU SHOULD CHANGE YOUR APPEARANCE TO FIT YOUR SOUND.THINK SKIN FROM SKUNK ANASIE. YOU KNOW WHO SHE IS DON'T YOU? I'M A BLACK WOMAN AND I'M NOT INTO R&B OR HIP HOP EITHER, ALL IT'S ABOUT IS GETTING A BLACK MAN LAID. IT'S GOOD TO SEE A SISTA DOING SOMETHING DIFFERANT FOR A CHANGE:/

NOT RACIST? What are you people talking about? This girl was put down for being a black girl who dosn't like r&b... in other words.... just because she's of a certain race, she is being told that she MUST like a certain style of music... if that's not racist, can someone please tell me what u call it?

When can we 'WHITIES' start up a United Caucasian College Fund, like our good 'brothas' and 'sistahs' get their own United Negro College Fund? WTH?!Furthermore, I just saw on add on the telly for the URBAN Chatline for Afro Americans. The add features all black faces and is filmed in a real 'HOODY' neighborhood. When can I start up a SUBurban Chatline for us WHITIES who drive minivans and have tulips growing in our well manicured front yards? Yeah Right! I'd have Al Sharpton and the good {ugh!} Reverend JJ hammering NAACP and ACLU into my immaculately kept lawn! That reverse racism crap is for the birds! Or should I say, BLACKbirds? ::SCOFF::

Xenafina "A racist is a person with a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race...."

I couldn't agree more. However, instead of getting angry at her for using the word incorrectly, you should take a step back and look at what she was experiencing! People were racially profiling her. Prejudice people were in her face, and when you are experiencing something like that you are likely more focused on keeping your emotions in check than you are worried about the subtle nuances between the words racial prejudice and racism.

If you don't believe me then just look at the facts… These people believed that because she is black, she must like R&B. When she said she didn't they wouldn't leave her alone or stop asking her about it because they believed race was the primary determinant in musical taste. She was being harassed because she was a black woman who didn't like "black" music. She has a right to complain. She is not an idiot, she is upset. The people were harassing her because she doesn't fit into their cookie cutter stereotypes. If you don't believe that she is being harassed then just check the definition.

Harass

1. to disturb persistently; torment, as with troubles or cares; BOTHER CONTINUALLY; pester; persecute.
2. to trouble by repeated attacks, incursions, etc., as in war or hostilities; harry; raid.

She wasn't bothered by the questions at first, but they keep bothering her about it. They report on it so much that her name is known more for what she is not than what she is, and nothing about that is right.

maybe I'm young... but when did everything spark a racial war between people who comment on this things? Are the same Neo Nazis hiding behind their screens searching for anything with a black person in it to argue with those that appreciate the actual video? I feel like I'm right.. & I'll stick with it..
-subject related-...
Santogold has been racially profiled against..when a Caucasian woman decides to sing soul ( hence Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse and Adele) , she is not chastized for not singing country/rock...right.. when will we allow music to cross these boundaries and allow creativity to be the stronghold on good listening...

Poster #13 says:
"If you don't believe me then just look at the facts… These people believed that because she is black, she must like R&B..."

Hey Marie? So, how is this any different from the little yuppie white boys who sing rap {some of them quite well} and are crucified in the press by numerous black rappers and critics? Oh, I know the difference. The little white boys keep their mouths shut instead of crying, "woe is me, I'm the victim of racism." It seems the blacks corner the market when it comes to the race card. Let a white scream, "racism!" and the NAACP will nail them to the cross BEFORE they burn it. This shit has gotten WAY too old.
This whole thing reminds me of a joke:

The Reverend Jesse Jackson was beckoned to a Sears appliance store by a disgruntled black customer. The black woman was upset because all of the washing machines on display were white. The good Reverend showed up Johnny-on-the-Spot and began ranting and raving at the manager at the injustice of it all. The manager calmly escorted Jesse to the nearest machine and opened the lid. Pointing downward he said, "It is true that all of our machines are white, but as you can see, when you look inside, all of the agitators are black."
Got me?
Peace...

Snow Berry, i 'love' your argument. "If White people had their own, blah, blah, blah" That is so annoying. And just like I'm sick of the whole "That's Racist!!!" rant, I'm sick of the whole, "Well we white people are always wrong if we do..."

I don't know this singer, but I've been in her 'shoes' as it were. I'm pretty open to all kinds of music and if she wants to do something other than R&B more power to her. I think she may need a better marketing team, but hey, what do I know.

Just so you know, all the agitators I know have been white.

Got ME??
Peace
