CocoRosie definitely don't come by their fame the traditional way. Since their 2003 debut, sisters Bianca and Sierra Casaday have made music quite unlike anyone around them, bringing hip-hop beats and harp solos together regularly in the mix. They're not one for convention, to say the least. To that end, the pair is releasing a single and video that may well manage to offend both Christians and Muslims alike. Their new one-off single 'God Has a Voice, She Speaks Through Me' is not designed to frivolously affront, explains vocalist Bianca Casaday, but rather to encourage people to discuss a topic that she feels needs to be addressed. "The basic subject that has been really heavy on our minds recently has been patriarchy," Bianca says. "As old of an issue as that might be, we've hit a new wave of it." She goes on to explain that the impetus for the song happened while relaxing on a beach in France, where she witnessed something that struck a nerve within her. "Being at the beach and seeing women in the water completely covered head-to-toe [in burqas] with all their husbands in Speedos, it hit me in such an intense way."
Rather than hold back the track and release it on their next CD, the pair felt strongly about getting the music out, along with a video that was further designed to initiate dialogue. In it, frontwoman Bianca is in various states of undress, at times wearing only a burqa and nothing else, dichotomous to the fact that burqas in the Muslim religion are worn to cover women fully in the name of modesty.
"It is political for sure, but the message is -- at least, coming from us -- the opening to a discussion," Bianca says. "People have a lot of opinions on the subject because people are really uncomfortable addressing it. It's almost like we're not allowed to talk about it. It becomes a cultural issue instead of a women's issue. For us, we're approaching it more as a women's issue. I've been so personally offended by it, in a way, that I'm ready to at least talk about it. I'm not forcing any statements down anybody's throats. It's just opening up some dialogue which is all we can ever hope to do."
