Two-Hit Wonders: A Taste of Honey

'Boogie Oogie Oogie' (No. 1, 1978)
'Sukiyaki' (No. 3, 1981)

During the height of the disco craze, even folks with three left feet got down, boogied and oogied with this dual-female-fronted R&B band's smash, in which the ladies laid down the groove both vocally and on guitar and bass. Less floor-shaking was the Westernized ballad version of Kyu Sakamoto's peppy No. 1 hit from 1963, 'Sukiyaki' -- which lyrically has nothing to do with the hot beef preparation of title in either English or the original Japanese.

hi there! I did some digging on Wikipedia not too long ago about this Sukiyaki song. and it turns out that the guy that did it was like a one hit wonder. he died in a plane crash about 20 something years ago. I've heard the original song too (even though I have never been to Japan). it IS really a beautiful song! but I can't understand any of the lyrics because I don't understand Japanese!!

The "guy that did it" (the original Sukiyaki) that you refer to was Kyu Sakamoto and he was a FAR cry from a one-hit wonder in his native Japan. A beloved star and a very decent human being.

I spent two years in Japan, Okinawa to be precise I am a former active duty Marine and heard the song sang in it's original words and to sorta of sum it up girl meets boy, girl fall in love with, boy leaves girl, girl is broken hearted, and she thinks she's might commit hari-kari, I can't remember all the words but you get the gist. Actually it's a beautiful song in the original

A Taste of Honey actually won a Grammy for Best New Artists in 1979! Here's the disgusting part...they were up against true musical legends The Cars, Elvis Costello, Chris Rea, and Toto. C'mon, these trite two-hit wonders actually managed to snag an award over Elvis Costello? Elvis Fucking Costello!!! Wise up Grammys! The need to make A Taste of Honey give their award back like they did to Milli Vanilli...

Can you read? They tell you what sukiyaki is in the last sentence. It's a "hot beef preparation" (there's actually more to it, but if you want to know more, look it up at Wiki).
