On This Date in 1940: Pop singer Tom Jones is born Thomas Woodward in Pontypridd, Wales.The Almanac Advises for June 7: "A classic novel that is required reading is Henry Fielding's 1749 novel 'Tom Jones.' The book tells of the romantic exploits of a young, lustful and handsome poor boy turned man making his way through genteel British society."
