Although Bonnaroo doesn't officially begin until Thursday evening at 5:45pm, when What Made Milwaukee Famous perform in 'This Tent,' Spinner ran into that band's Austin, TX scene-mates, the Sword, outside their RV which was parked in Guest Camping. Drummer Trivett Wingo was grilling up miniature T-Bone steaks, tailgate style, while guitarist Kyle Shutt watched approvingly. Both were drinking the king of beers, Budweiser. "Bonnaroo does have a reputation for being a hippie festival because I never even heard of it until we were asked to play it," Wingo tells Spinner. "I said 'What's that?' and they were like, 'Oh, it's these people walking around with garbage bags full of mushrooms and a bunch of naked people on acid. We said, 'Okay, we'll do that -- it sounds fun.'"
The Sword are scheduled to perform at the festival's 'That Tent' (not to be confused with 'This Tent' or 'The Other Tent') tonight, but will stay on site, grilling T-Bones and drinking Budweiser, until Saturday. In addition to catching Metallica, who are outspoken fans of the Sword and who will have them open for them on their European tour, Wingo says he's looking forward to catching Grupo Fantasmo's set tonight.
"What we're going to do tonight has universal appeal," he says. "So hopefully some hippies will enjoy it too." Copy that.
