Police in Lancashire, England, are being accused of widespread corruption: They've been playing the radio. The Performing Right Society, the British licensing organization in charge of collecting royalties on behalf of songwriters and musicians, is seeking an injunction against Lancashire Chief Constable Steve Finnigan, claiming copyright infringement in police stations around the district.
Not surprisingly, a local news report has inspired a mildly amusing flurry of posts, with readers suggesting songs and bands the bobbies might be listening to: 'I Fought the Law,' 'Back on the Chain Gang,' the Fun Loving Criminals and, of course, Gordon Sumner's old band.
Apparently, given the ironic law-breaking nature of the charge, the constable's playlist doesn't include 'Karma Police.' Hey, it's not like Radiohead needs the royalty money.
