What's That Song in the Mitsubishi Outlander Commercial?

'Je Ne Te Connais Pas,' by Prototypes

The opening chords sound more than a little like the Pixies' 'Monkey Gone to Heaven,' and on the cover of the Prototypes' U.S. debut the band looks more than a little like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Hey, they're French -- they could claim total ignorance of American rock 'n' roll and we'd be none the wiser.

They do, however, seem to have a thing for mirrors. The new Mitsubishi ad that features the group's music strings together several images of the Outlander crossover cruising alongside its reflected image, sometimes kissing bumpers with itself. Inside the car, a bunch of smartly dressed, presumably footloose-and-fancy-free young people bob heads to the kickin' sound system. "Hop in -- it's Go Time," says the voice-over dude, your new best friend.

(At precisely which point did small-SUV manufacturers become deathly allergic to ads that feature their actual target audience? Little secret: If you're not rolling with the booster seats and the juice boxes, you ain't buying a crossover.)

Before they took Mitsubishi money, the Prototypes scored a spot in an iPod commercial ('Who's Gonna Sing'), so they clearly have it going on. With two sets of signatures on a pair of licensing deals, they've already done more to rehabilitate French pop's shaky reputation than Daft Punk, 'La Vie En Rose' and, uh, Depeche Mode combined.
