Jenny,
You may want to try the amino acid L- Tryptophan- I use it every night for insomnia- not only does it work beautifully but it makes my mood much happier when I wake up. I have read about it being used very successfully for depression. It is not a drug, has no side effects- I've been using it for the past 10 yrs. I get it online from Bios- theirs is very high quality and pure- only drawback is it is expensive.
Warmest wishes for a speedy recovery:-)
Hello, Hello?at 6-25-2008
Depression has kept me from living life to the fullest, no doubt about it. I take 75mg of Effexor XR daily to cope with it, but it's certainly no cure.
Jennifer, hang in there. You're definitely not alone.

Jennifer,
Discuss it with close friends or other people who care.
Mental disorders are tricky to the human eye.
I don't know what your situation is, completely?
But,isolation can certainly add to the misery.
I hope you will control and, hopefully overcome this!
Seek help, in any capacity, if it is needed.
I have my ups and downs, as well.
Keep the faith, girl!

Jenny,
Have you tried 20 mg of paxil a daly. I suffered with panic attacks, anxiety and depression off and on for years. No doctor could ever "fix" me.
Finally, my family doctor put me in the hospital for a week and ran every test conceivable and came up with the chemical imbalance. Not enough serotonin.
He put me on the Paxil and I have been taking it, 20mg a day for over 10 years, no more depression.
It may not be the drug for you, but there is one.
Don't stop looking.
Bless you,
Jack

Interesting comment about tryptophan as a sleep aid. I am a lactation consultant and numerous studies now show that tryptophan--which is abundant in breastmilk and is a precursor to seratonin--and non existent in formula, is what causes peacefulness in the baby and prevents depression later on in the older child and adult. In other words, a child who is breastfed for at least a year (optimally longer) and who receives ample tryptophan through the breastmilk then receives the necessary seratonin which helps prevent depression later on in life. Alternatively, not being breastfed, or not breastfed long enough and then being nutritionally deprived of this tryptophan inducing serotonin is what is contributing to the huge amount of depression now being diagnosed in this country. There is an entire generation of babies in this country whose mothers were convinced that formula was superior to breastmilk--one of the biggest experiments ever gotten over on the American public without it's permission by the way--and there is a whole generation of us who have been deprived of nature's way of preventing depression and we are now seeing the results of this.

Jenny.
Hang on, Lady. This is just temporary. Depression is debilitating, but keep faith that it will not be forever. ZOLOFT was the right choice for me. I started taking 50 mg every day, and even though it take a couple of weeks to get into your system really well, I felt a zillion times better starting the very first day simply because I was doing something about it. After it kicked in, it was wonderful. It didn't make me feel euphoric like some kinds of illegal drugs or something, but it took away that terrible, inexplicable sadness, and was able to open me up to happiness when it came around. Please get yourself on something. Life really will be beautiful even though things seem so bleak now.

Jenny, I know how it feels to feel low and not want to dress or be around people. I have struggled with this in the past but have been totally transformed with God's help. When I do feel a little sad, I try my best to watch movies or TV shows that make me laugh! That usually helps. The other thing I would strongly suggest is that you get really close to God during those times of deep despair. He is the one who created you and knows how to help you. Just talk to Him and He will answer. If you enjoy reading, please check out from the public library or purchase this book - The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. It will change your life and give you a more positive outlook. When we know why we are here and that each life is precious and has purpose, it helps raise those serotonin and dopamine levels - I know because it has worked for me. You are in my prayers. May God richly bless you.

Hi, Jenny,
I just wanted to tell you to hang in there and keep the faith! I've been where you are now. Depression is only temporary. Try increasing your Vitamin D intake. You can do this orally or by spending at least 20 minutes/day in the sun. Your body needs this vitamin. Also, I take a combination of 20mg/day of paxil and 30 mg/day of cymbalta which also helps my pain from a car accident. If you're looking for a more alternative wholistic approach, then try Sam-e. I have a friend who uses that instead of drugs and it works for her. Best Wishes! Don't give up! Always have hope!

Hi Jenny,
Thank you for sharing. It takes great courage because many people, especially those who have never suffered from depression cannot comprehend how debilitating it can be. Please know that you are not alone, pray, never give up, keep busy, keep in touch with family and friends, take baby steps, write a list if you need to (ie: brush teeth, get dressed, do laundry, make dinner, etc). My faith in God has literally saved my life and healed me from a life of depression. There is light at the end of the tunnel for all who suffer, please hang in there and don't give up! Take care and God Bless!

Hi Jennifer,
I am not 100% on medications for depression. This is just my experience. I have been depressed and sometimes fall back into that state, but the only thing that has helped me is seeing a psychologist. I am very anti-medications. Although my husband used to battle depression and was taking medications. He was not the same during that time. No emotion, very numb and he was like a zombie. He decided to get rid of the meds and after a few struggles is doing great now. Sometimes we just need to fight our demons by rationalizing them out, if medical advancement can't help. I wish you the best, hang in there and things will get better.

my dr. never took brain scans of my seratonin levels :/ and I'm type 2 bipolar. I want a brain scan! (If only for a momento).
p.s. it's nice how everyone wants to help, but every person is different and meds work differently on everyone. in order to get the proper meds, you really need to consult your physician and let them guide you through the process. but honestly, counseling is the most important part of the healing process when it comes to mental disorders. meds aren't magical, they only ALLOW you to learn how to heal yourself.

I have felt the same way as Sheryl except I feel it later in life. It always seems easier when you are younger. It gets more difficult with age and when you are alone.
siked1at 6-26-2008
Hi Janet,
I know it can be harder for those of us who are older to reach out, but I hope you do so you can experience the support that is out there for you. May God bless you and heal the part of you that feels sad and alone.
