The long wait is over. For the first time in human history, the sound of wobbling jelly has been successfully recorded. Sound artist Douglas Murphy will present his latest masterwork at an event billed as an "architectural jelly banquet" at University College London this weekend. The conference features ten shortlisted entries in a contest to design gelatinous models of famous buildings. Seriously.
The evening will also include food costumes and, inevitably, a riotous finale of jelly wrestling. Murphy's eccentric, bass-heavy soundtrack, no doubt turned up to eleven, will provide the entertainment.
Ear experts, apparently, have studied jelly for decades. The vibration of collagen in the inner ear is how we distinguish musical notes.
"It is refreshing to explore the sonority of a much neglected physical property: the wobble factor," said the artist. Neglected? People love it when the Fat Lady sings.
