Coheed and Cambria are not a fictional band, even though the band is named after a fictional husband and wife -- Coheed and Cambria -- whose offspring have superpowers. The story plays out in a five-part saga and is further fleshed out in a graphic novel by vocalist/guitarist Claudio Sanchez called 'The Amory Wars.' Needless to say, Sanchez is no stranger to fantasy. "I was definitely surrounded by anything fantastic," Sanchez tells Spinner. "When it came to comics, I was definitely a fan of the Marvel and the DC mythology."
Sanchez recently launched a new character, Kill Audio, via a comic strip on MySpace. The strips will also appear this summer in the graphic novel anthology 'PopGun.' "Right now we're kind of presenting it as strips," Sanchez says. "Essentially, when they're all together, it makes a 22-page comic that gives you an introduction to the character and exactly what his purpose was."
Kill Audio, which originally was a sort of Sanchez alter-ego, will also appear as a limited edition vinyl toy, bearing some physical resemblance to Sanchez himself. "We kind of played off the name a little bit, put this doll through hell, and then in looking at him after the prototyping stage realized that there was a story in there somewhere."
As for the stories he tells in Coheed and Cambria songs, Sanchez says that before inventing his own plots and concepts, he drew inspiration from others. For example, the song 'Everything Evil' was "originally going to be based off the dinner scene in 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre.'"
Kill Audio will be available in select vinyl toy stores soon. In the meantime, the real Coheed and Cambria will hit more conventional venues later this month, when they embark on a short tour with the Secret Machines and Russian Circles.
