Potent Quotables: Martin Won't Back Down

"There's nothing weird about calling your baby Chewbacca if that's what you want. It's no stranger than Sarah."--Chris Martin

When you name your daughter Apple and your son Moses, you have to say stuff like this.

I get Martin's point. Would you rather name a name too strange to name a human baby, or would you risk picking up your child in Kindergarten calling out a child who probably shares the same exact name as your class mate? Where's the individuality in that?

If you want a name that merely identifies, just use a number like 3.14159, When the kid grows up, he or she will have lots of other kids calling him/her Sweetie Pi....or Honey Pi...or asking her for a tgaste of Hair Pi.

In their quest for "unique" names, some parents seem to forget that there's a child trapped under that name. I wouldn't want to be named Razor Blade or Paper Clip, so I sure wouldn't do that to a child. There are plenty of actual names out there that aren't commonly used by every other parent in the carpool.

I agree with you completely. Another point to bring up is that the child might decide they don't like their name when they get to be a preteen or teen anyhow. It's best to pick something that the kid can live with their ENTIRE lives. Yeah Apple might be cute for a baby but who is to say the poor kid won't get called Apple Bottom or something silly throughout their life.

I read a few years ago that boys have a harder time with "different" names than girls do... Either way, you should think twice about what you call your kid.

"Psycho Baby" just might turn ou to be a nut!

Me, I'd pick a name that a) isn't too common, and b) I wouldn't mind having myself. Take into account that your kid will be stuck will your good or bad decision for the rest of there childhood, if they really want it changed after that, they can make their own good or bad decision. Until then, you will be the one responsible for any good or bad nicknames that he or she gets stuck with. Think of that before you decide on a name.
