Potent Quotables: Penn Pushes Buttons

"We all know we're here tonight 'cause the Who never did sell out, unlike certain music channels." --Sean Penn

Never one to miss an opportunity to be controversial, the actor took a jab at VH1 during the channel's own ceremony honoring the Who.

Heh. Cheers. I remember when VH1 was all about the music, like MTV. Now, its turned into E! and all the music they EVER play is Top 40 in the mornin and everything else, when people are napping. It's sad about what happened to a channel I really enjoyed when I was a kid. Now, I go to YouTube for my music.

Is he kidding??? The Who(re) sold out LONG ago! I can't even flip through TV channels without hearing a Who song in a bunch of commercials! And how many "final world tours" have they had -- 30?!

The Who are one of the best bands ever. Even though there music was sold to tv shows it is still their music. Music Television doesn't play music. Change the name of the channel to TTV. Teen Television.

Dear heavens... another actor who thinks anyone cares about what he thinks. We like actors becasue they can act...thats make-believe for you young ones. So Penn can do make-believe really well, but that doesn't mean he has any capacity for philosophy or political comment...he's just so much meat that directors put in costumes and position so the director can shoot a scene, and then edit the idiotic crap the actors do so it looks good.

Someone should send Sean one of The Who's classic albums, which actuall is titled "The Who Sell Out"

They were an amazing band.

First off, "The Who Sell Out" is actually a very non-mainstream album. Secondly, what commercials are Who songs in? I know they are used for the themes to the CSIs but what else? Thirdly, actors should have opinions. It makes them more than monkeys. And don't diss the craft of acting, cairnhowff, it's harder and more consuming than anything most people do ever.

Ahhh, Sean. You are a thespian. And a darn good one in certain roles. Stick to it. Incidentally, The Who were an OK band in their time--which was mine as well--but I can tell you they shared the spotlight with some pretty powerful bands or equal and often greater talent.
