Rivers Cuomo and Tom Morello aren't the only rockers who are Harvard material. Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger tells Spinner he will start attending the top-tier Ivy League university this fall. "I'm gonna study music theory and composition and, hopefully, the sciences -- physics, cosmology," the 32-year-old says. "I've taken some college credits before, but I haven't studied anywhere in 12 years." Einziger got the learning bug again after assisting in an article about evolution. "My friend was the author of the article and I was a participant along with an evolutionary biologist, who is the head of the biology department at Brown," he says. "So I went and spent some time over there while we were doing this article and I just felt like I needed to get back into a classroom. It really kind of hit me that I wanted to be studying." For Incubus fans worried as to how this might affect the future of the band, Einziger says the timing is perfect, as the group is on hiatus for the next year or so (he expects the band to begin work on their follow up to 2006's 'Light Grenades' next summer).
One of the areas Einziger plans to explore academically is a longstanding desire to get into orchestral work. On August 23, he will be premiering at UCLA's Royce Hall a symphony he composed. "I had to have surgery for a wrist injury last March and I couldn't play guitar for a few months at all," he recalls. "During that time I definitely needed a creative outlet other than playing the guitar, so I started writing music for the orchestra, which is something I've always wanted to do, but never really had the time or opportunity."
