Its an impolite word, just like any other impolite word. The amount of focus vested on it is just ridiculous. You can't tell me not to use a word,ANY word. Freedom of speech is essential. Insulting is unnecessary, however. Stevie is referring to the latter, of course. His journey has been a lot more difficult than what most youngsters could imagine--both black and white--and there is a strong underlying reason why he has erased the "significance" of the word from his vocabulary. The man knows what he is saying. His statements carry some wisdom...hidden though as it may be.

Context context context.... while it does have a bad history... it still is just a word (and one we obviously can't stop people from saying). The intentions behind the person who uses it is all that matters.

wow for all of you who think its no big deal and that anyone could call you a name and you wouldn't get angry- know this:
its very degrading considering that's what slave owners used to call their black slaves
most of you are probably caucasian since you are so insensitive and rude and don't know the severity of the N-word
im a caucasian but i still have respect for others of all races and ethnicities and find it indescribably rude and immature to be so ignorant about a word that is so disgracing to all african americans
