Last night Billy Joel said goodbye to New York's Shea Stadium, with a little help from his friends. The site of both the first-ever stadium concert in rock history, put on in 1965 by the Beatles, and myriad historical Mets moments, including their 1969 Miracle season, Shea Stadium is dear to many a music and sports fan's heart. "They're gonna be tearing this place down," the Long Island native told the crowd, "but I want to thank you ... for letting me do the best job in the world." The baseball stadium will be demolished to make way for the new Citi Field. Throughout the night, Joel was joined on stage by the likes of Tony Bennett, Paul McCartney, Roger Daltrey and Steven Tyler -- who each treated the sold-out crowd of more than 55,000 people to selections of their own songs. In the worst lyrics category,I nominate "close the door, let me rub your back where you say it's sore" from,of course,"close the door" by Teddy Pendergrass.
Also all the lyrics from Macarthur Park by Richard Harris especially "macarthur's park is melting in the rain, all the sweet green icing flowing down"
And "are you going to Scarborough Fair, parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme?" by Simon abd Garfunkel. Are these spices sold at Scarborough Fair?

It's 'sweet cream icing'.

Well, Phil, Simon and Garfunkle did not write Scarborough Fair. Not even close! It's a traditional English ballad that has been around for CENTURIES. If the lyrics are a little odd, blame on the fact that they date back to the 1600s!

I remember seeing Jethro Tull and Robin Trower at Shea years ago. Concert tickets were always out of the average persons reach so the few times I ever saw a concert, it was a rare and special thing I also remember seeing the Beatles at Shea - on tv of course, as a child - and would have loved to see Billy Joel at Shea. Maybe Billy and some of the other talented musicians can do a FREE CONCERT like U2 did, on a flatbed, for the masses! U2 set the bar when they did that. Hopefully others with means can emanate U2, Bill Gates, and all the churches who are doing something for others, such as building truly affordable housing, creating jobs and doing other things to share Gods love in action by spreading the wealth.

Pebo - how you speak on a public forum reflects your upbringing. Why don't you take your issue up with the concert promoters, producers and in fact, the whole music industry? And another idea, City Hall can work with the NYPD and Fire Dept. to arrange for people who want to do concerts in NY, to set aside some affordable tickets for Police Officers and Firefighters, especially those injured and disabled in the line of duty. Maybe the performers and producers of concerts here in NY would be open to giving up some of their $$$ profits for a gesture of appreciation to those who put their lives on the line every day for 20 years.

Pebo, thats the problem, you do 20 years as an officer helping people, and you can't afford even one ticket to a rock concert. Only the wealthy can. Certainly not people struggling to pay rent. But as for your comment it was pretty harsh ... as a result I doubt you were ever really a p.o. in NY. The way you used that F word, ya could have fooled me! If you were a real, dedicated NY P.O. you disgrace the NYPD with your nasty low down sentiments. Whats your shield number?

I think that there SHOULD be free tickets for Fire Fighters and Police Officers in EVERY city who would like to see a concert. AND the performers SHOULD MAKE SURE that the tickets ARE affordable to the average person. People can ALSO save up, a few dollars every week, turn in soda bottles, have a garage sale, save a nickel and double it every day..it adds up amazingly fast...just like ball games..MANY people can't afford to go nor take their children..the players could PAY for people to go to their games, 1 child and 1 parent, based on school grades or income levels...

In 89' I saw The Stones at Shea and during the show they broke out into this cool blues jam. I heard an insane guitar riff that could not have been Richards or Wood (no offence), when out walks Slowhand himself Eric Clapton. Shea hadn't shook like that since 86 (?)during the Series. That to me was the greatest concert moment I had at Shea.
Sorry I'm a Yankee fan.
