Devendra Banhart, 'Carmensita' -- Video Premiere

For his latest single, Venezuelan folk rocker Devendra Banhart sends up low-budget Bollywood flicks with a clip that is full of dancing, hammy special effects and tongue-in-cheek subtitles with questionable English translations. Banhart plays a prince who must use his snake-shooting eyes, knife throwing prowess and "rebellious beard" to save the a beautiful princess. Real-life girlfriend Natalie Portman plays the damsel in distress, and clearly has some fun with the role. Take a look. Buy it on iTunes.

Are Bollywood movies really the thing to spoof? It will be lost on most mainstream US viewers, the majority of which haven't even heard of the term Bollywood and even if they do get it, its like the old cliche "Kung fu movie" spoofs i.e bad dubbing scratch prints, that are not represtative of modern asian films, likewise, this video spoof will not be respresentative of the majority of major Bollywood films, which are quite colorful and entertaining, and have well translated English subs.
The ones I have seen we're not low bugdet in the least and had well choreographed dance numbers.

The video was tongue-in-cheek.. it's supposed to be stupid! I loved it. They are a young couple having fun and I highly doubt either of them will regret it. Have you ever seen her rap on SNL? The girl did graduate from an Ivy league school,Harvard, and she speaks 4 languages. Also, to the person who thinks this is blasphemous, Portman has done nudity..The Dargeeling Limited and Closer.

What the hell was that?? Is it a joke?? I don't see anything sexy about that video or Natalie Portman's boyfriend. He looks a little creepy!!

This thing was EXTREMELY weird and disturbing. First of all, the Banhart guy needs to pull up his pants! Eww! No one wants to see that! Not only did Natalie look stupid in this, but she also acted like the whole charade was stupid as well (which it was, needless to say). I'm pretty sure that this Ivy Leaguer will regret this video in the future. I'd be quite embarrassed to see this video if I practiced Hinduism, as it seemed to be almost mocking the religion.
