On This Date in 1977: During a Tony Orlando & Dawn show in Cohasset, Mass., Tony Orlando abruptly announces he is leaving show business, surprising the audience as well as the other two singers in the group. The Almanac Advises for July 22: "People leave longtime jobs for reasons, including low pay or lack of advancement, a grueling commute, or a conflict with co-workers and bosses. It is almost never wise to abruptly quit without notice. It's better that you grin and bear it in the short term, while simultaneously searching for the right replacement."
