Top 20 Worst Songs Ever: No. 19

    'What's Up'
    --4 Non Blondes (1993)

When grunge music started moving units back in the early '90s, this group showed up as the genre's angst-free, family-safe counterpoint. Even though frontwoman Linda Perry moved on to a successful career writing and producing songs for superstar artists, that doesn't make up for her cringe-worthy yodeling in her former band's only hit song.

if these songs were so bad, why did millions of copies of these songs get purchased, requested for radioplay, and concert venues get sold out? must be a conspiracy somewhere!!!! otherwise, someone may actually LIKE some of these songs-ya think?!?!

    I'll tell ya why !!!

Beginning in '82, the youth of America has been systematically (sp?) brainwashed into deciding their musical-tastes via MTv.

"Pop-Music" has successfully eaten itself !!!

Just because a song is a hit doesn't mean it's not terrible. Remember "Don't Worry, Be Happy" and "Ice, Ice Baby"? I agree that this song really wasn't that bad, but it's daft to base a song's quality merely upon how successful it was.

wow... i do like this song... but have you heard some of the crap that has made radio air play... as a musician i can tell you confidently that my mediocre songwriting is better than half of whats on the radio but that doesnt mean it will ever hit regular radio mainstream airplay... it's not about talent in this business... it really is who you know... there is a band called return to forever made up of older mucisians that you would recognize from their work with other artists... but when this quartet of gentlemen takes the stage as they are... it is musical magick... electric dynamite... seriously what music should be... simply amazing... but very few people actually know this band... but they know santana(no disrespect)... many talented people release indepent recordings everyday... that will never be heard by the ear that didnt search for something new and original... i could only pray to be 1 of these unsung and unsigned heros... remembered by only the few that took the time to look with there ears through the soundwaves of time... (and before anyone says anything smart[word loosely used] i am well aware that the ears are not the organ of sight in the human body... it was a figure of speech moron)

Then again, if you noticed, pretty much ALL of the songs in this list were really popular. With this evidence, I've come to the conclusion that most worst lists are like roasts; the people get to rib the song and the people who made it, even though they may actually like it. I've actually seen a song on both a best and worst song list at the same time, and it probably wasn't the only one.

This song is god awful...it hurts my ears to hear that singer yodel that terrible chorus...im glad someone else finally said somethign about how bad it is. People are way too easily influenced by what they hear often and it gets in their head, so they think they like it, instead of just being something they cant get out of their head.

I liked this song, too. Obviously, those of you who refer to the female lead singer's singing style as "yodeling" have NO IDEA just how horrible REAL yodeling is (done by hillbillies while drinking their moonshine in the backwoods mountains) in comparison. This song did NOT sound like yodeling at all; she actually sounds a lot like Pat Benatar would have sounded had she done a cover of that tune. It's a decent tune.

    You are ALL stupid.
If (A) person digs a song , it's up to them. Just because YOU don't like it means nothing.
As far a Yodeling...southern people didn't create this in the backwoods...look up in your dictionary you retarted idiot.

I am so glad this is on the list! When it came out, and she said "what's going on" I said "what a dumb song!!!!!" Cuz it is...who knew this woman would go on to write "Beautiful" for Christina Aguilera!

You guys are crazy! Be objective... I LOVE That song, it's one of my all time favorites. It's not your *type* song that you get into obviously but that doesn't make it bad because you don't "get it". Cmas1964 was correct in his comments earlier. ALOT of people loved it. Maybe your next worst 20 songs list should be something that is *obvious* that NO one likes, but that wouldn't work either becuase frankly, there's SOMETHING for EVERYBODY... But I guess you "gotta sell papers" and fill in something your 'spinner' site. How about a list with songs by actors that try to crossover and sing, now THAT would be a trash top 20. (no one show's up to those events save for the fact that they are an "actor" lol)

When it all comes down to it, these songs shouldn't have been hits. But they were. Musically they are overblown (especially this one) BUT they were good songs, which is why they're on here. They're the best worst songs ever. I personally loves things like this BECAUSE I love the music on them.
