"[It's] ... cultural depravation in its most vulgar and displeasing-to-look-at form. It's suicide as a lifestyle." --Ted Nugent

During an interview with celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, the notoriously opinionated singer went off on obesity in the United States.

He is right. As a chef, I find it unbelievable how ignorant and stupid and careless people are. If you gained 30 pounds, shouldn't you start to question youe eating habits?

We can all have a rough period in life and food can be conforting, so I am not criticizing the person that at one point or another gains 15-20 pounds. The point is then going back to normal once your life is back to normal.

An obese person is an addict. I don't understand why alcoholism and drug addiction are taken seriously while addiction to junk food and garbage is not. Ah, right, I forgot, the food companies make billion selling you garbage, and they pay off Congress to allow this depravity. However, there are resources available to get informed and one can also use the services of a nutritionist.

Being obese is a choice, just like pointing a gun to one's head.

But how does it affect you? Drugs are illegal and the root of crime, alcoholism could also lead to DUI, crime, etc. I agree that it is an addiction. But if that is how someone chooses to live their life, it is their life to live. Your tone seems very angry. It can be looked at as a life style choice, much like homosexuality. Neither appeals to me, but neither affect me or my daily life either, so to each his own.

what an idiotic viewpoint. to believe that the morbidly obese choose to be so is completely ignorant. as a healthcare professional i have treated many overweight people, they don't choose to be that way. their metabolisms are different, as are their genetic codes. some folks are just lucky to have more active thyroids than others, but to blame the unfortunate is moronic. get a clue before you open your mouths, that's a choice you can make - acting like an intelligent being.

I agree. Obesity is a huge problem in this country. I understand that sometimes it's not the persons fault due to thyroid conditions and things like that, but many times it really is the persons fault. And, mcox899421, you're an idiot for being so rude to someone just because they have a different opinion than you - especailly when they're 80% right.

Ted? Oh, Ted............I watched you on the hunting programs and the stuff you did with Celebs. The hunting episodes with you in them, were so neat. The celeb stuff you did? Was weak..You sold out man....I am a 49 years young, I am a lady who loves to pheasant hunt.........I can`t kill a deer though. But my son who is 1/4 Abnacki Native American does at least one kill a year with his bow and arrow. He is 21 and has been hunting since he was 8 yrs. old.. At our age? You being much older than me~~~Talk about obesity..........Man your hair is gray and as a matter of fact Ted? It is way to long. Try being your age and thaw out a wee bit. Or is it a latent acid trip catching up on you? Id you really gave a damn about obesity you would not make rude nasty remarks as you were quoted as making. Try out the word C-o-m-p-a-s-s-i-o-n! Don`t you know that words hurt folks? If you really want to do something productive? Try walking in other`s moccasins......AS you sit there in your Ivory Tower, and judging others.....Life is a journey not to be taken lightly, but rather to hold human kind, by the hand and lead them into the right directuin w/o judgement by you..........
    Peace, light~~happiness........

Thank you...someone at last got it right. The young Americans these days are a bunch of disgusting, whiny little punks. They pull guns rather than fight with their bare hands, they blame everyone else in the world for their decisions, and we wonder why our country is going to s**t? You all need to be taken out back behind the wood shed and when you come back from getting your ass beat, you need to sit down, shut up, and pay attention. "Oh pity me because I'm fat" "I'm not white so I deserve everything handed to me" Wake up you bunch of sissies. If you're fat, quit eating so much and exercise. If you don't have a job, I know McDonalds is hiring. If you don't like what real men have to say, move to France or Canada where sissies are the norm. Oh, and take all the other bleeding heart liberal pieces of crap with you when you go would you please? Thanks!

Excluding thyroid issues (which they make medications for), obesity is just a sign of laziness and lack of self respect. Nobody says you have to be super fit or look like a body builder (I know I don't), but come on...there are way to many disgustingly fat people in this country!

wow? laziness? I am almost 100 lbs overweight. I wake up every a.m. at 5 and workout for at least an hour. Everyday. 7 days per week. For the past 15 years or so. Then I proceed to work a 10 hour day at home while raising my two children. I volunteer at Church and my daughter's school and the food bank. I spend hours each evening/weekend playing outside with my children. I can not recall the last time we've had fast food. It has been YEARS. My nearly 2 year old son has never even had a french fry let alone fast food.

I am considered a very hard-working and energetic person. In fact those close to me call me "hyper" and get annoyed that I can't even sit still long enough to watch a movie (I hardly ever watch t.v. as it bores me to tears).

Yet I'm obese. I hate being overweight. I hate how it feels. I hate how others treat me. I hate being uncomfortable in my own clothes. I count every calorie I eat, I've been to many doctors and have a variety of health factors along with meds that have not helped but that I must take.

    I'm not lazy.

I know some very thin people who are very lazy in general and not very smart about their food choices. I know thin people who can eat fast food for lunch 5x a week, don't work out and fight for the closest parking spot at the store.

I doubt anyone would make obesity a choice. For most it's the one thing in their lives that they would change if they could and most fight very hard to try to.

I'm not addicted to food. I seldom overeat and when I do it's on Thanksgiving or Christmas. I think I was born to be big and maybe no matter how hard I try I always will be. However, I will never be a cruel or ignorent person. And I would never judge a persons based on their weight or race.

Brenda, you are not the typical obese person.
Obesity rates are rising at a frightening pace in the US because of LIFESTYLE CHOICES, not because of genetics or health factors. If most people ate healthy, ate appropriate portions, and got an adequate amount of exercise, they would be "chubby" at worst. Very very few would be obese, and if they were, it would likely be due to some medical condition.
Not to mention, a poor lifestyle can cause medical conditions which bring on weight gain and then make it harder to lose that weight. Many people get started off on a bad foot as children, since their parents ingrained bad habits.
If you are raising your kids as they say, then that is a great start for them to be a healthy weight as adults.
