On This Date in 1973: Stevie Wonder sustains serious head injuries when a log from a lumber truck crashes into the automobile in which he is a passenger. He awakes from a four-day coma having lost his sense of smell.

The Almanac Advises for August 6: "It has long been understood that the blind have developed heightened senses. What is actually more likely is that they possess a keener reliance on their otherwise normal senses of hearing, touch and smell to compensate for their lack of vision."
