On This Date in 1984: 'Ghostbusters,' by Ray Parker Jr., floats to the top position of the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart.

The Almanac Advises for August 11: "According to a recent survey, one third of Americans believe that spirits of dead people can and do return to this world. A slightly higher percentage similarly hold that houses can be haunted. One out of five says people can communicate with the dead, and one out of 10 maintains that spirit possession is real."
