James Cason, the U.S. Ambassador to Paraguay, is doing his part to make up for his fellow Americans unleashing Paris Hilton's recording career on the rest of the world. The career diplomat took it upon himself to learn Guarani, a complex native language in his host country, then recorded a CD of indigenous folk tunes in his new tongue. Despite the misgivings of critics, the disc became a surprise hit. One senator, citing Cason's "horrible voice," proposed a formal censure. Reviewing a CD release concert, the newspaper La Nacion complained the ambassador "sang in the monotone of a tired bird."
Still, Paraguayans are eating it up. "It's strange," said one 16-year-old fan, "but people love it." Cason is set to retire from the State Department this summer, so it would appear he's not listening to his detractors: He's quitting his day job.
