Yo La Tengo Rock for Obama

A sizeable chunk of the Indie-Rock Nation threw its support behind Barack Obama on Sunday at a Brooklyn for Barack benefit concert, featuring performances by Ebony Bones, Titus Andronicus and Yo La Tengo. England's Ebony Bones (aka British soap star Ebony Thomas) got the crowd warmed up with an unlikely mix of punk and Caribbean sounds, including a stage-thumping performance of her UK hit 'Don't Fart on My Heart,' before handing the stage over to Titus Andronicus -- who announced that they had been hanging out backstage with Senator Obama himself. Although reports of Obama's presence may have been somewhat exaggerated, scores of volunteers were on hand to enlist support for his campaign, as was "guest DJ" David Cross (who spent roughly 10 seconds behind the turntables).
Despite all the fun, it was a bittersweet occasion as well: this was the last-ever free concert at Brooklyn's popular McCarren Park Pool, a former public swimming pool that is now slated to revert to its original function. Yo La Tengo even gave it a head start by interrupting their set to pour in a few bottles of water. They were then joined onstage by fellow New Jerseyites Titus Andronicus for a rousing cover of the Misfits' 'Where Eagles Dare,' and the ceremonial waving of the New Jersey state flag. The trio closed their set with the mellow sounds of 'Autumn Sweater,' as hundreds of wistful hipsters filed out of their beloved outdoor venue for one last time.
