IFLTS: 'It Makes No Difference,' The Band

'It Makes No Difference,' The BandFrom 1978's 'The Last Waltz'
'It Makes No Difference' is nearly the most forlorn and heartbreaking song I know. The Band's Rick Danko, a dreamy bassist with warm and round tenor pipes, handles vocal duties with such emotion that you feel like he's singing about you -- or for you. It's overwhelming in the best of ways.
"Well I love you so much, and it's all I could do/Just to keep myself from telling you/That I never felt so alone before."
The song is featured on 1978's 'The Last Waltz,' which served as a simultaneous reunion and goodbye for the Band, who had been "16 years on the road." The first time I saw the concert was in my first year at Hampshire College. Consequently, the person I watched it with became my best friend.

stellar pick! 'unfaithful servant' off 'rock of ages' is another live danko favorite. robbie robertson's string-pincher of a solo on that is genius.
