On This Date in 1987: Sonny Bono inaugurates his political career when he announces his bid to run for mayor of Palm Springs, Calif.

The Almanac Advises for August 26: "From Bob Dylan's polemical folk songs to Public Enemy's status-quo-challenging rap, along with all varieties of protest songs too numerous to mention, rock 'n' roll has always been a soapbox for the politically disaffected."
