On This Date in 1949: Gloria Gaynor, who had a 1979 No. 1 hit with 'I Will Survive,' is born.

The Almanac Advises for September 7: "Data shows that in the U.S., about a half million babies are born prematurely each year, which is about 10 percent of all births. With modern improvements in neonatal care, many more 'preemies' are growing up to lead healthy, normal lives than ever."
