'Windy'
--The Association (1967)
The defense: The songwriter claimed it's about her dog, who walked "down the streets of the city, smiling at everybody she sees."
The verdict: Not guilty. Despite a separate claim that the band's 'Along Comes Mary' was about pot, only a squeaky-clean glee club could sing 'Cherish.'

The above writeup says "only a squeaky-clean glee club could sing 'Cherish.'"
For the writer's information, the bass player of that "squeaky-clean glee club" died of a drug overdose.

I never heard the suggestion that young Ruthann Friedman's lyrics to "Windy" had anything to do with windowpane LSD, but I'm pretty sure Tandyn Almer's "Along Comes Mary" had serious references to marihuana (Mary Jane). Witness the line "... when the morning of the warning's passed, the gassed and flaccid kids are flung across the stars..." Brilliant lyrics, really. And keep in mind, The Association weren't choir boys. Sadly, the band's original bassist Brian Cole succumbed to a heroin overdose in '72 while still with the band.
