Indie Rock Fans Have Low Self-Esteem

If you're saddled with a bunch of friends who are still pining for that Pavement reunion, you probably think they're all total losers. Well, a new British study says that chances are pretty good that they agree with you. Researchers at the Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh asked over 36,000 music fans to describe their musical tastes and their personalities, and found, among other things, that folks who loved indie-rock had very low self-esteem.

The study turned up a number of other shockers, including revelations that rap fans tended to have high opinions of themselves and reggae aficionados preferred lazing around with a spliff to actual work. The folks with the most in common, intriguingly enough, were classical and heavy-metal fans, both of which shared "a love of the grandiose." Heck, if you look at Gene Simmons and Mozart side by side, you can add "a fondness for silly wigs" to that list as well.
