Rocker Assaults Cops With Donuts

"That was a close one!" as Chief Wiggum says after nearly blowing off his own head, trying to eat a donut off the barrel of his gun in 'The Simpsons Movie.' NYPD officers apparently took the bait again when Scott Sturgeon, a.k.a. Stza, ringleader of several New York hardcore and ska punk bands, flung a box of donuts in their direction during a protest show at Tompkins Square Park.

Observers say Stza also pointed his guitar at the officers and shouted "This machine kills cops!," a variation on Woody Guthrie's famous inscription on his own guitar, "This machine kills fascists." After the show, the police arrested the singer and tasered some audience members, who were shouting "Freedom of speech is dead!"

The confrontation comes at a time of mounting animosity between the local precinct and Lower East Side punks, who believe the cops are arbitrarily interpreting New York law to require the bands to perform at low volume levels. Stza and his bands, Leftover Crack, the Star F---ing Hipsters and the occasionally reunited '90s ska punks Choking Victim, have been participating for some time in events commemorating the infamous Tompkins Square Riots of 1988, in which police officers enforcing a newly instated curfew were accused of excessive force.

Hey, you'd be testy too if they were all out of chocolate glazed.

We played with them twice sounds like something they would do. Do that in San Diego and you might get blasted. Seriously. grow the hell up already.

I'm so glad to see that the commenters are supporting our men in blue (or black or grey or khaki depending on where you go).
A peace officer's job is hard an thankless enough without a bunch of spoiled children being upset that they can't disrupt the residents in the neighboring area with their poor taste in music throwing a box of doughnuts at them.
My father has been a police officer for more than twenty years, and he eats Chick Fil A and Tex-Mex food. I haven't seen him eat a doughnut in probably ten years.

I give a big hell yeah to stza.

Only one of them threw a box of donuts, Ryuichi-Chan... Only one. But great job attempting to elevate yourself above the situation with an adolescence-inspired condescending tone.

This is another ridiculous story on how our police force is out of control. Last week, three cops fired 47 shots into a homeless guy with a water gun. What's to say that they didn't over react here?

It takes one good cop to judge the situation and walk away. Two or more cops with an adrenaline rush and nothing else to do is a dangerous situation...

What a bunch of wannabe losers. I bet they don't even know what they claim to stand for. I'm more than certain that failure at life couldn't even properly define what a "fascist" is. Oh, and throwing a box of donuts is not freedom of speech, asshat.

Leftover Crack is actually an amazing punk band. And it's freedom of speech! THEY'RE ALLOWED! Police are nothing but normal people, but with guns and a badge of power. Were they elected? No. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Cops are normal people, but with power.
Corrupted pigs with the authority to fire weapons and immobilize people with tasers. I'd love to see how they'd like it.

I'm a 66 year old retired educator, and I say that many of the freedoms of the Constitution have been whittled away. Police brutality is rampant, and they have police "investigators" who absolve themselves of all blame, no matter how heinous. I don't agree with much of what these young people say, but I damn well think that as Americans they have right to say it. THAT is what made America the country it is...and we are losing that.

I agree but when your action start pouring into my yard then I have the right to get upset and have the same right to voice my opinion and have the right to do something about, I helped make sure of that when I joined the Marines at 17.

No way should this guy be associated with being in a NY Hardcore band. A protest show at Tompkins sounds more like a bunch of squatter punks just being a bunch of losers. You know the types that hang out on the Lower East Side and ask you for change and if you are stupid enough to give them any they might even curse you out after you do. So my point here is this isn't NYHC (New York Hardcore) bands doing this. Might be hard for some of the 1 toothed yokels from Arkansas to figure out but maybe James Sullivan (writer of the story) should look into it more as well.
