British power-rock trio the Subways just released their sophomore effort, the Butch Vig-produced 'All or Nothing,' but it isn't the only release the band have lined up this year. Next month, the band makes their big screen debut with a cameo in Guy Ritchie's new London gangster smash-up 'RocknRolla,' which is out in select cities on October 8, and nationwide on Halloween."I got a phone call from Guy [while] we were in America making the new album," frontman Billy Lunn told Spinner of how they got involved with Madonna's hubby's project. "He actually sounded quite nervous on the phone even though I'm sure I was way more nervous than he was. He was a very articulate man and explained that they'd thought of approaching us first after hearing 'Rock & Roll Queen' and seeing us play at festivals -- how raucous we usually are."
The trio -- Lunn, bassist Charlotte Cooper and drummer Josh Morgan -- filmed their part in the movie during a break from recording 'All Or Nothing,' last year.
"[We] came back to the UK for small shows and a festival run and [the film crew] joined us for our Bournemouth show at the Fire Station," Lunn explained. "It was really quite surreal having all the crew wandering around the venue and seeing Guy Ritchie in the corner setting up shots."
As a director, Lunn said Ritchie was a "gentleman" and made sure to respect their on stage art rather than block out -- for example -- Cooper's penchant for bouncing across the stage.
"During the show he just told us to do whatever we usually do and to just be ourselves," Lunn said. "He really just wanted to accommodate us but we really wanted to be polite and respectful and engaging so were we willing to try whatever he had in mind. We did our thing and he did his, and the scene turned out really well."
And it appears, from Lunn's hints, at least one member of the cast of 'RocknRolla' takes a beating during the Subways' performance. "I've always wanted someone getting 'done in' to one of my songs! On screen, of course," he said.
But according to Cooper, the only chance American fans will get to see the band this year, is on screen. "We want to go back, but we're just trying to figure out the right thing to do," she said. "Hopefully early next year... will be a good time, 'cause we're going to be busy with a European tour for the rest of the year."
