Built to Spill 'Perfect' at All Tomorrow's Parties

Friday was the opening day of the inaugural All Tomorrow's Parties New York festival, held at Kutsher's Resort, the once-glorious vacation spot in the Catskills Mountains that inspired the film 'Dirty Dancing.' During his set on the second stage, comedian Patton Oswalt got a huge laugh when he likened the creepily outdated accommodations to a French horror movie. (And as guests here, we can confirm a definite 'Shining' vibe.) ATP so far is also essentially a weekend-long indie-rock summer camp for grown-ups, with around 4,000 hipsters in black t-shirts acting like giddy 12-year-olds -- swimming, playing air hockey and chilling by the pond between shows.

For the festival's first day, a selection of indie-rock legends performed some of their classic albums from start to finish. Highlights included Bardo Pond's fuzzed-out, flute-infused 'Lapsed,' and a scorching performance from the Meat Puppets, who finished off their run-through of 'Meat Puppets II' with a raucous rendition of the Beatles' 'Tomorrow Never Knows.' Headliners Built to Spill capped off the night with a face-melting performance of their much-adored 'Perfect From Now On,' before launching into an extended encore that included every rock fan's favorite question: "Anyone know how long we're allowed to play for?"
