Dodos Land on Treasure Island

When the guitar-drum duo known as the Dodos (fresh from a never-ending tour including a stint as honorary members of the Akron/Family) performed at Treasure Island music festival this past weekend, it was a homecoming of sorts. The festival is held on a man-made island halfway across the Bay Bridge from San Francisco to Oakland. The Dodos, who are San Francisco residents (when they're not crisscrossing the country in a van), confessed to Spinner that it was comforting to be back at home base for the weekend.

As for Treasure Island, with its rich history but limited functionality, frontman Meric Long actually visited the manufactured land-mass once before. "My friends have a sailboat and they took me sailing across the bay. I thought I really enjoyed sailing but it turns out I hate the wind. There's just something about it that makes me uncomfortable," he says. By the time the boat reached Treasure Island, Long was over it; he cried mutiny and hopped a bus home. "But there's another excuse, too," he says, admitting that if his sailing friends read this, he'll be called out on being "a liar."

Ironically, for the music festival, the only way for fans to reach the venue was by bussing it from the ballpark downtown. Sailing's not an option and dodos don't fly.
