On This Date in 1948: John Mellencamp, aka Johnny Cougar, John Cougar and John Cougar Mellencamp, is born in Seymour, Ind.

The Almanac Advises for October 7: "When children grow up, they often reject the nicknames of their youth as being childish. They may insist on being referred to by more formal versions of their name in order to reflect their newly achieved maturity."
