Application Turns iPhone Into Theremin

If there's something psychotic about the need to be first on your block with the latest technology, now there's software that fits your psychosis with its own soundtrack. A company called Leisuresonic has designed an application, called Cosmovox, that will turn your iPhone into a pocket theremin. The theremin is the strange, sliding-pitch instrument heard in old science fiction classics like 'The Day the Earth Stood Still.' Notoriously difficult to play -- sound is transmitted by waving your hands around, but not touching, the instrument's antennae -- the theremin's eerie warble has inspired similar effects on the Beach Boys' 'Good Vibrations' and the Portishead album 'Dummy,' to name two examples.
By engaging an existing built-in feature of the iPhone (you know, the old accelerometer), Cosmovox allows the user to approximate the sound of a theremin simply by waving his iPhone around. Guaranteed to make new friends in a movie theater.
Hey, it's a lot more fun than the last cell phone accessory to hit the market.
