On This Date in 1957: During a tour of Australia, Little Richard announces he is quitting rock 'n' roll for religious reasons. He throws away all his jewelry to demonstrate his sincerity.

The Almanac Advises for October 12: "Many African-American musicians are rejecting the wearing of 'bling' out of solidarity with those fighting the export of 'conflict' or 'blood' diamonds from African nations such as Sierra Leone."

The story I got from his record producer "Bumps" Blackwell is that Richard got scared due to air turbulance and made a promise to God that if he survived the plane ride, he would give up "the Devil's music" and dedicate his life to Him. ("Bumps" also told me that he got James Brown to finish the Australian tour pretending to be Little Richard!)
