On This Date in 1959: "Weird Al" Yankovic is born Alfred Matthew Yankovic in Downey, Calif.

The Almanac Advises for October 23: "In any kingdom, the court jester is perhaps one of the powerful people in the royal court. His ability to bring up controversial points in the guise of jokes, which often mock the rich and powerful, often marks the jester the voice of the common people."
