On This Date in 1995: Gloria Estefan becomes the first pop singer to perform in front of a pontiff when Pope John Paul II requests her musical presence.The Almanac Advises for October 27: "Some performers get discouraged when performing for undersized crowds. It takes a real trouper to give the same kind of show for a sold-out audience as for an underpopulated one."
